Hello

Journalism is the first draft of history, and context is crucial to setting foundation.

Ever since I was a little girl, I have possessed a deep love for stories, love that I think really started when I sat down on the edge of my mom’s bed one night and heard the story of how she escaped Cuba in search for a better life for me. Something about the passionate way she told the story really affected me. To this day, I still get chills whenever she tells me about the struggles her 23-year-old self endured on a tiny speed boat, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, with Cuban guards surrounding her on all sides.

The story has stuck with me—as most good stories do. In fact, it’s actually what led me to choose to be a journalism major. I’ve known I wanted to make a career in storytelling for a very long time now because I want to have the opportunity to inspire others through the tales I tell, just like my mother inspired me. My love for writing and researching also led me to choose this career path. I was the kid who secretly enjoyed writing research papers throughout my years in middle and high school. And, once I got over my initial stage fright, I found that I enjoyed standing in front of a class and sharing my findings. This led me to apply to the University of Florida and join the College of Journalism and Communications as a journalism major.

Ultimately, it is my life goal to impact those who read or view my stories for the better, whether that be by keeping them informed daily or by giving them the platform to share their own story. Like the saying says, “Journalism is the first draft of history,” and I'm glad to be able to tell it.
